Lab-12 NAND and NOR Gates

Objectives:

Determine experimentally the truth tables for NAND and NOR gates connected in various configurations.

Components:

7400, 7402, 7404, 7408, Four 1K ohm resistors, DIP switches, Protoboard Bag of wires, Banana clips for power supply and for DMM.

Procedure:

  1. Implement a truth table for the following logic expression (show all intermediate points in the truth table. That is, you should have columns for A, B, C, D, C’, (C’ + D), B(C’ + D), and finally Y):

Y = A + B(C’ + D)

  1. Draw the logic diagram for this expression

  2. Assemble the appropriate devices onto a breadboard and connect them as indicated in the logic diagram. The pin outs are specified in the data sheets. You need to go online to pull down the data sheets.

  3. Connect power (+5V) and Ground to the as shown in data sheets for the devices

  4. Connect the DIP switches to your inputs A, B, C, D. One end of the switch connects to an input and a 1K ohm resistor connected to 5 Volts. The other end of the switch connects to Ground (see diagram below)

  5. Manipulate the switched to apply 1’s and 0’s (+5 V and ground) to all inputs (all 16 combinations)

  6. Measure and record the output voltages and compare it to the truth table you created
